Although she shares the view of her children that he lost a significant amount of mental capacity, she assumes that some awareness is available to him. Not even the “top professor” is able to come to grips with the complexity of the brain.

Sohn: Ja, irgend so. Und dort spielt er oft und sagt, ja, ja, der, ja, ja, das weiss ich schon.

Mutter: Aber wenn ich ihm einen Gruss sage von jemandem

Sohn: Ja, dann, was sagt er dann, Mami? Ja, ja. Komm, das ist alles gespielt.

Mutter: Nein.

Sohn: Doch, 100 prozentig.

Mutter: Ich weiss nicht, ob er noch so spielen kann.

Sohn: Das ist alles gespielt. Alles.

Mutter: Ich denke einfach, wir haben ja ganz ein komplexes Hirn, das kann sich ja niemand vorstellen. Nicht einmal der oberste Professor, denke ich manchmal. Und da hat er an einem Ort ein bisschen so, wo das drin ist, diese Namen und so und dass er die Leute kennt.
