Dann habe ich sie nach Hause geholt. Ich glaube, ich habe sie mittlerweile seit drei bis vier Monaten Zuhause. Am Anfang war es sehr schwer. Auch ihr Kurzzeitgedächtnis und so, das war weg. Wegen dem ist sie auch gefallen. Ich habe gesagt, bleib sitzen, ich komme sofort wieder und sie stand hinter mir auf und ist umgefallen und hatte das... Ich habe sie mit Mühe und Not dann doch nach Hause gebracht. Und seither sage ich, pflege ich sie hier. Am Anfang war es sehr schwer. Ich hatte noch keinen Treppenlift.

Mr Clau C., spouse, was very dissatisfied with the care his wife received in the intensive care unit.

Then, yes, ICU / she was confused. I have to say that. She was very confused. But the large part had no understanding of their confusion. That made me as an outsider, because I was with her every day and I followed everything, that was for me not / that I just did not understand.
In principle, in the background, she said, "Yes, she's crazy!" That was the attitude of the large part there. So, I found that troublesome. I always said / but they did things in part. Yes, in her confusion, she once / if there was someone who treated her badly afterwards and he came to her, then she sometimes made such movements. Such defensive movements. In principle: Stay away! She didn't really notice it at all.

Mr. Clau C. was dissatisfied with his wife's care in the ICU.

Relatives can feel lost and often do not understand how ICU procedures work. Some reported a positive feeling and confidence that their loved one was being well cared for. However, most relatives said they would have liked more support during the difficult time.

E1: Yes. Yes. No, I have to say that. From the medical team, they've already spoken to me. I have to say that. They explained everything to me. The nursing staff, the first two or three months, when she came round again afterwards, when I came, one of the ward staff came and said, Mr XX, just a moment. I'll be with you in a minute. She explained to me what had happened during the night, from the time I left in the evening until the next day. I thought that was great. 
I : Mhm.
E1: The longer she was there, the less it became. In the end, I always had to beg them to give me any information at all about what happened during the night. I called in the morning and asked how it had gone. Yes, good and all. But every time I came, the first few months, they came to me on their own initiative and gave me really great information. I have to be honest. After that, it was gone. It was over! Nothing more! Zero. Of course that's not satisfactory.                                                     I : No. That's right.
E1: I had to ask every time, how did it go? What is it? What does it look like? Is something going on? Because many times she had this or that or that or with the dialysis, what was going on or something. I had to pull all that out of their noses. Nobody came forward of their own accord. I thought that was bad. I thought that was really bad.
I : Where did you get your medical information from? Did you get it from the team and the doctors or from the internet?
E1: I didn't have the internet or anything. The only thing I had was a doctor. I don't even remember her name. She was very good. She sometimes took me into the office separately and talked to me about how, what and where. I thought that was very good. But there was nothing more from the nursing staff. There was nothing. And that, yes.

Consistency in information

Patients want to interact with the team. They want to be respected. If patients can't respond, it doesn't mean they don't understand or don't want to be explained. The care relationship benefits from words, explanations of what the nurse is doing, and multi-sensory listening, even when the patient does not seem to be aware or able to process detailed information.
