Petra P.

For more than 6 months, Mrs. Petra P. was treated in different intensive care units and in rehabilitation. She somewhat forgot about these stays. With a lot of effort and patience, she was able to return home and lead an independent life. She found great support from her husband and family.

TEXT

Dont ignore the patient

Mrs. Petra P. did not like the fact that the nursing staff did not speak to her, but rather spoke to each other or to her family.

TRANSCRIPT

E : Very bad. I : Very bad. What was the worst thing? E : Just that they always ignored me, the carers. They made jokes on the side and I lay there so helpless, look. That's just it, that's it. I think that's a shame. I : Yes, they didn't talk to you much? E : No, not that much. I : Did you get the feeling that they didn't turn their attention to you? E : Yes. Yes. I : And otherwise it was just your husband talking, wasn't it? E : Yes, it was just my husband and my children. I : And the children, the family? E : Yes. They came from time to time, as it goes ..... I : What would you prefer, what should they do differently in the intensive care unit? E : Well, in intensive care; just organise the care a little differently. That's what bothered me the most: ‘Yes, yes, we're just coming’ and they run past you ten times and don't come. That bothered me terribly. A bit more friendly. I : I'm listening to you. E : Yes. I : Did you feel lonely? E : Lonely when I was alone in the evening, but otherwise my husband was always there. I : A bit back that time? E : Yes, yes. And children sometimes and so on, but.... I : You weren't recognised as a person, were you? E : Yes. I : That's what bothered you? E : Yes. I : They did their job. And you wish that were different. E : Yes.
