E : Tenevano sempre la finestra aperta. Io morivo di freddo nel letto e loro continuavano a tenere la finestra aperta. Allora ho detto che avevo freddo, ma non mi hanno sentito.
I : E l'impotenza? L'ha percepita?
E : Sì, quando ero lì dentro da solo e guardavo solo le pareti e // lì ho / (stavo quasi per buttarmi fuori).

Solitudine

I : Vous souvenez-vous de situations où vous vous êtes sentis mal à l'aise ? Pensiez -vous à ce qui se passait ici ? Comment était la respiration ?
E : Ils avaient toujours la fenêtre ouverte. J'avais froid comme une folle dans mon lit, et ils ouvraient toujours la fenêtre. Et là, j'ai dit que j'avais froid. Ils ne m'ont pas entendu.
I : Et l'impuissance ? L'avez-vous ressenti ? 
E : Oui, quand j'étais allongée là toute seule et que je regardais juste les murs et // là j'ai / (j'ai failli sortir par le haut).

Solitude

I : Erinnern Sie sich noch an so Situationen, wo Sie sich unwohl gefühlt haben? Dass Sie gedacht haben, was passiert hier? Wie war es mit der Luft?
E : Die haben immer das Fenster offen gehabt. Ich fror im Bett wie verrückt, und die haben immer das Fenster geöffnet. Und da habe ich gesagt ich friere. Das haben die gar nicht gehört.
I : Und Hilflosigkeit? Haben Sie das wahrgenommen? 
E : Ja wenn ich mal da drin alleine gelegen bin und nur gerade die Wände angeschaut habe und // da habe ich / (wäre ich fast oben raus).

I : Do you remember any situations where you felt uncomfortable? That you thought, what is happening here? What was it like with the breathing?
E : They always had the window open. I was freezing like crazy in bed and they always had the window open. And I said I was freezing. They didn't even hear that.
I : And helplessness? Did you realise that? 
E : Yes, when I was lying in there on my own and just looking at the walls and // I / (almost panicked).

E : Very bad.
I : Very bad. What was the worst thing?
E : Just that they always ignored me, the carers. They made jokes on the side and I lay there so helpless, look. That's just it, that's it. I think that's a shame.

E : No, not that much.

E : Yes.
I : Did you feel lonely?
E : Lonely when I was alone in the evening, but otherwise my husband was always there.
I : A bit back that time?
E : Yes, yes. And children sometimes and so on, but....
I : You weren't recognised as a person, were you?
E : Yes.
I : That's what bothered you?
E : Yes.
I : They did their job. And you wish that were different.
E : Yes.

Dont ignore the patient

Patients want to interact with the team. They want to be respected. If patients can't respond, it doesn't mean they don't understand or don't want to be explained. The care relationship benefits from words, explanations of what the nurse is doing, and multi-sensory listening, even when the patient does not seem to be aware or able to process detailed information.
