P : Avevo anche i guanti. L'infermiere che era così cattivo con me mi veniva sempre vicino. Credo che anche lì avessi dolore. E ora ho ancora la ferita con il VAC. Mi diceva sempre di stare calma. E io avevo i guanti. Non potevo difendermi. Avevo sempre un formicolio. E lui rideva sempre: “Sì, tra poco te ne vai”. E l'impotenza, il non potersi difendere. Ho lottato così tante volte contro i guanti. Ma non riuscivo a togliermeli. E sì, poi sentivo sempre quel formicolio nella testa e poi mi addormentavo.
P : No, non me ne sono accorto. Certo che volevo. No, in realtà no. 
A: Non hai notato i guanti.
P : Sì, nei sogni. Nei sogni, sì. Ci ho lottato a lungo nei sogni. Ho anche provato ad aprirli con la bocca, ma non ha funzionato. E non poter alzarsi quando si vuole.
I : SÌ, è terribile...
P : È tutto contro la propria volontà.

M. Viktor V. explique que les gants étaient si gênants qu'il les ressentait encore dans ses rêves.

P : Là, je portais aussi les gants. L'infirmier qui était si méchant avec moi, il venait toujours sur le côté. Je crois que j'avais aussi mal là. Et maintenant, j'ai encore la blessure avec le VAC. Il m'avait toujours dit de rester calme. Et là, j'avais les gants. Et je n'ai pas pu me défendre. J'avais toujours des fourmis dans les jambes. Et il riait toujours comme ça :" oui, maintenant tu vas partir." Et l'impuissance, et tu ne peux pas te défendre. J'ai si souvent lutté contre les gants. Mais je n'arrivais pas à les enlever. Et oui, j'ai toujours ressenti des picotements dans la tête et puis je me suis endormie. .
P : Non, je n'ai pas remarqué. Bien sûr que je voulais. Non, pas vraiment. 
A : Tu n'as pas remarqué les gants. 
P : Oui, dans le rêve. Dans le rêve, oui. Je les ai longtemps combattus dans les rêves. J'ai aussi essayé de les ouvrir avec la bouche, mais ça n'a pas marché. Et ne pas pouvoir se lever comme ça quand on veut. 
I : OUI, c'est bien sûr grave...
P : Tout cela est contre la volonté.

P : Da hatte ich auch die Handschuhe an. Der Pfleger, der so böse zu mir war, der kam immer an der Seite. Ich hatte dort, glaube ich, auch Schmerzen. Und jetzt habe ich da noch die Wunde mit dem VAC. Der hatte immer gesagt, ich soll ruhig bleiben. Und da hatte ich die Handschuhe. Und ich habe mich nicht wehren können. Ich hatte immer so ein Kribbeln. Und der hat immer so gelacht: "Ja so jetzt bist du eh gleich weg." Und die Hilflosigkeit und du kannst dich nicht wehren. Gegen die Handschuhe habe ich so oft gekämpft. Aber ich habe sie einfach nicht weggekriegt. Und ja, dann habe ich immer das Kribbeln im Kopf gespürt und dann bin ich eingeschlafen.                                                    .
P : Nein, habe ich nicht mitgekriegt. Natürlich wollte ich. Ne eigentlich nicht. 
A: Die Handschuhe hast du nicht mitgekriegt. 
P : Ja doch im Traum. Im Traum, ja. Also gegen die habe ich lang gekämpft in den Träumen. Da habe ich die auch versucht mit dem Mund aufzumachen, das hat aber nicht funktioniert. Und so nicht aufstehen zu können, wenn man will. 
I : JA, das ist natürlich schlimm…
P : Das ist ja alles gegen den Willen.

P : I was wearing gloves then too. The nurse who was so nasty to me always came to my side. I think I was in pain there too. And now I still have the wound with the VAC. This person describes the intertwining of reality and nightmares and the resulting feelings of anxiety.

I: And how many of your dreams were reality? 
P: Unfortunately, more than I thought, which scared me the most. I also had a nurse who really tormented me in my dreams. And it was like a crazy professor who tormented all the patients. And so I thought for days that this was a dream and suddenly he walks past my room. All the doors are always open. And that gave me a real cold shiver uh over the....
I: It was just the same person or did he really torment you in some way? 
E: No, I don't know. I talked to him too, but only a day later or so. And I apologized, although I don't know what I was apologizing for. And he was like, yes, he apologized too. And I was like, oh, what is he apologizing for? But then I didn't ask any further. But he was maybe a bit rough or too strict with me. I think he was also there the night I ripped out my own tube. But I only had one nurse in mind. She really scolded me and yelled at me, but I didn't find that bad. I found it more reassuring and she was worried about me and yes, she only meant well.

This person experienced nightmares.

The nurse was very strict with Y. so that there was a feeling of fear and threat.

"That was (nickname A), that was her name. That's the nickname among the carers. (Nickname A). Because she's so bony and so robust. Erm. She really folded me up. That was right, because I didn't understand. Firstly, why there were a hundred tubes hanging from my body. And I don't think I understood that I could "easily" die from it either. Not that it could have cost me my life if the tube had ripped out my lungs or I got stuck or God knows what. And I think, how could it? I just panicked. I can't say anything. I also dreamt about it, but at the moment when I ripped the tube out, I don't know anything, I only know about the moment when the carer yelled at me or tells me that it's dangerous. I could tell from her voice that she was angry and scared for me at the same time.

Readiness to communicate from the team: Patients have the feeling of being ignored, isolated,  considered as not being to able understand.Sometimes the patients had the feeling that the team was arrogant and felt threatened.

It is important for this relative to be with the patient, especially when the patient awakens from the coma.

E : Yes, because you think: ‘I want to be there when you wake up. I want you to see that I was there when you wake up’. You never know if he realised I was there. Did he realise I was there? How much did he realise about me? Did he realise that I never left the relative alone. And then it was. I think it's really important for relatives, especially when it's parents, siblings or a partner, that you can be there when they wake up. Just like this: Hey, you're just waking up, but I'm here. Like this. Yes. So if I could have, I would have been there more.

Relatives wants to be present

Family and friends are helpful during the ICU stay. But patients want to be able to choose their visitors. It is therefore important that the team informs and involves the family.
