Credo che per i familiari sia molto importante, soprattutto se si tratta dei genitori, dei fratelli o del partner, poter essere lì quando la persona si sveglia. Semplicemente così: «Ehi, ti stai svegliando, ma io sono qui». Sì. Se avessi potuto, sarei stato lì di più.

I familiari vogliono essere presenti

Pour ce proche, il est important d'être présent auprès du patient. C'est particulièrement vrai lorsque le patient sort du coma.

E : Oui, parce que tu penses : « Je veux être là quand tu te réveilleras. Je veux que quand tu te réveilles, tu voies que j'étais là". On ne sait jamais s'il a remarqué que j'étais là. Est-ce qu'il a remarqué que j'étais là ? Combien de choses a-t-il entendues de moi ? A-t-il senti que je n'ai jamais laissé le proche seul ? Et puis c'est tout. Je pense qu'il est très important pour les proches, surtout s'il s'agit des parents, des frères et sœurs ou du partenaire, que l'on puisse être là quand la personne se réveille. Comme ça : « Hé, tu te réveilles, mais je suis là. Comme ça. Oui. Donc si j'avais pu, j'aurais été plus présent/e.

Ich glaube für Angehörigen ist es ganz wichtig, gerade wenn es Eltern, die Geschwister oder der Partner, dass man da sein kann, wenn derjenige aufwacht. Einfach so: He, du wachst gerade auf, aber ich bin da. So. Ja. Also hätte ich gekonnt, wäre ich mehr da gewesen.

This person describes the intertwining of reality and nightmares and the resulting feelings of anxiety.

I: And how many of your dreams were reality? 
P: Unfortunately, more than I thought, which scared me the most. I also had a nurse who really tormented me in my dreams. And it was like a crazy professor who tormented all the patients. And so I thought for days that this was a dream and suddenly he walks past my room. All the doors are always open. And that gave me a real cold shiver uh over the....
I: It was just the same person or did he really torment you in some way? 
E: No, I don't know. I talked to him too, but only a day later or so. And I apologized, although I don't know what I was apologizing for. And he was like, yes, he apologized too. And I was like, oh, what is he apologizing for? But then I didn't ask any further. But he was maybe a bit rough or too strict with me. I think he was also there the night I ripped out my own tube. But I only had one nurse in mind. She really scolded me and yelled at me, but I didn't find that bad. I found it more reassuring and she was worried about me and yes, she only meant well.

This person experienced nightmares.

Many patients report experiences that can be associated with hallucinations and confusion. These  memories are often present for months after hospitalization.

The nurse was very strict with Y. so that there was a feeling of fear and threat.

"That was (nickname A), that was her name. That's the nickname among the carers. (Nickname A). Because she's so bony and so robust. Erm. She really folded me up. That was right, because I didn't understand. Firstly, why there were a hundred tubes hanging from my body. And I don't think I understood that I could "easily" die from it either. Not that it could have cost me my life if the tube had ripped out my lungs or I got stuck or God knows what. And I think, how could it? I just panicked. I can't say anything. I also dreamt about it, but at the moment when I ripped the tube out, I don't know anything, I only know about the moment when the carer yelled at me or tells me that it's dangerous. I could tell from her voice that she was angry and scared for me at the same time.

Mr. Viktor V. explains how the gloves were such a nuisance that he still felt it in his dreams.

P : I was wearing gloves then too. The nurse who was so nasty to me always came to my side. I think I was in pain there too. And now I still have the wound with the VAC. He always told me to stay calm. And then I had the gloves. And I couldn't defend myself. I always had such a tingling sensation. And he always laughed: “Yeah, now you're going to be gone anyway.” And the helplessness and you can't defend yourself. I fought against the gloves so often. But I just couldn't get them off. And yes, then I always felt the tingling in my head and then I fell asleep.
