E: J’ai beaucoup de rêves, beaucoup de rêves où je vois toute ma famille, la famille de mon mari, des employés, tous mes amis, les amis des familles, de ma copine, des copines de ma fille, je vois tout. Mais par contre mon frère , ma sœur...je vois tout le monde, mais sauf ma mère et mon père.
I: Donc vous étiez dans le coma, mais vous perceviez quand même la présence des gens? 
E: Beaucoup, beaucoup. Tout le monde, tout le monde était là.

I: Sie lagen also im Koma, aber Sie haben trotzdem die Anwesenheit von Menschen wahrgenommen? 
E: Sehr, sehr sogar. Alle, alle waren da.

E: I have a lot of dreams, a lot of dreams where I see all my family, my husband's family, employees, all my friends, family friends, my girlfriend, my daughter's girlfriends, I see everything. But on the other hand my brother, my sister...I see everyone, but not my mother and my father.
I: So you were in a coma, but you still perceived the presence of people? 
E: Very, very much so. Everybody, everybody was there.

Mrs. Béatrice B. was afraid of being in pain when the medical team came to mobilise her, but she understood that it was for her own good.

I : And aren't there times when you would have preferred not to be mobilised and they made you do it anyway because they said it was for your own good or something like that?
E : Yes, that's what I don't like to do, because I don't like feeling bad, because I'm afraid, it's true. And she said: ‘No, madam: you're doing this for yourself, it's for your own good, you see you've been here in intensive care for a long time’, she showed me my green card (insurance) and I look at it all the time too. ‘I'm the nurse, I've made a note of it.’ I don't know how she can.

Fearing mobilization

.Patients are aware of their inability to be and act autonomously. They suffer from the fact that the team often does not understand what they are feeling. This feeling of discomfort is accompanied by forced patience, often by fear or anxiety, and sometimes by aggression. On the other hand, they appreciate the clinical team's expertise in this area.

Understanding the feeling of helplessness

Mrs. Beatrice B. was happy to see her husband, but refused to receive visits from others.

E : Yes, the ceiling. He also showed me, I went there to look, I took the photo, I said this/that I remember. And every time I talk to my husband for a moment there because he can't always, I'm sad. But he can't go either because I have the child, I have work. And after he's there, I feel even safer. That's it.
I : Okay. So the fact that your husband came to visit you was a plus?
E : Yes.
I : But when you were awake, I'm not talking about the coma phase, when you were in intensive care.
E : Yes. 
I : And when you were awake, who came to see you? Your husband?
E : Yes.
I : But not really friends?
E : No, I don't like to have them.
I : Because it wasn't allowed?
E : No, it's rather that I don't like someone coming. During...
I : Okay. It was you who decided that only your husband could come.
E : Yes.
I : And your daughter? 
E : Yes. 
I : Also. But with the other people, it was you who could, you had the right to say: I want to or I don't want to.
E : No, I don't want to.
I : You were the one who said that?
E : Yes. Even when I'm upstairs, when someone I didn't want for a week I don't like the visits. I'm tired.

Choose visitors yourself

Family and friends are helpful during the ICU stay. But patients want to be able to choose their visitors. It is therefore important that the team informs and involves the family.

Contact with family

Mrs. Beatrix B. feels a great sense of gratitude towards the team.

I : When you think back to that time, what feelings do you have now?
E : Well, I have all the time in the world and I don't know how to say thank you to all these people. I don't have much money, but I gave a truckload of chocolates. To say thank you. Even my husband said you are really yours, cheerful 24 hours a day, I know. You can't find that person. I know. She is really one of those people who, with love, with the sick, we really need that.

Gratitude

Most patients praise the clinical team. It was a difficult time and they are grateful to have survived.
