I : Ma nessun amico?
E : No, non mi piaceva che venissero  gli amici.
I : Perché non era permesso?
E : No, è più che altro che non mi piace che qualcuno venga. Durante...
I : Capisco. È stata lei a decidere che solo suo marito poteva venire.
E : Sì.
I : E sua figlia?
E : Sì.
I : Anche lei. Ma per le altre persone era lei a decidere, aveva il diritto di dire se voleva o no.
E : No, non volevo.
I : È stata lei a dirlo?
E : Sì. Anche quando sono su, se c'è qualcuno che non voglio vedere per una settimana non viene. Non mi piacciono le visite. Sono stanca.

Scegliere i propri visitatori

E : Oui, le plafond. Il m’a montré aussi, je suis allée là-bas regarder, j’ai fait la photo, j’ai dit ça / ça je me rappelle. Et chaque fois que je parle avec mon mari un moment là-bas parce qu’il peut pas tout le temps, je suis triste. Mais lui, il peut pas aussi aller parce que j’ai l’enfant, j’ai du travail. Et après lui il est là et je suis encore plus en sécurité. C’est ça.
I : D’accord. Donc le fait que votre mari venait vous rendre visite, c’était un plus?
E : Oui.
I : Mais quand vous étiez réveillée, je parle pas de la phase du coma, quand vous étiez en soins intensifs.
E : Oui. 
I : et réveillée, qui c’est qui venait vous voir? Votre mari?
E : Oui.
I : Mais pas vraiment d’amis?
E : Non, j’aime pas avoir.
I : Parce que c’était pas permis?
E : Non, c’est plutot  que j’aime pas que quelqu’un vienne. Pendant...
I : D’accord. C’est vous-même qui avez décidé que seulement votre mari pouvait venir.
E : Oui.
I : Et votre fille? 
E : Oui. 
I : Aussi. Mais les autres personnes, c’est vous qui pouviez, vous aviez le droit de dire: je veux ou je veux pas.
E : Non je veux pas.
I : C’est vous qui avez dis?
E : Oui. Même aussi quand je suis en haut, quand quelqu’un que je ne voulais pas une semaine j’aime pas les visites. Je suis fatiguée.

Choisir soi-même ses visiteurs

E : Ja, die Decke. Er hat es mir auch gezeigt, ich bin hingegangen und habe es mir angeschaut, ich habe das Foto gemacht, ich habe das gesagt / das weiß ich noch. Und jedes Mal, wenn ich mit meinem Mann dort eine Weile spreche, weil er nicht immer kann, bin ich traurig. Aber er kann auch nicht gehen, weil ich das Kind habe, weil ich arbeiten muss. Und dann ist er da und ich bin noch sicherer. Das ist so.
I : Okay. Also war es ein Vorteil, dass Ihr Mann Sie besuchen kam?
E : Ja.
I : Aber als Sie wach waren, ich meine jetzt nicht die Komaphase, als Sie auf der Intensivstation waren.
E : Ja. 
I : Und wenn Sie wach waren, wer hat Sie dann besucht? Ihr Mann?
E : Ja.
I : Aber nicht wirklich Freunde?
E : Nein, ich mag keine sehen.
I : Weil es nicht erlaubt war?
E : Nein, es ist eher so, dass ich es nicht mag, wenn jemand kommt. Während...
I : Okay. Sie haben selbst entschieden, dass nur Ihr Mann kommen darf.
E : Ja.
I : Was ist mit Ihrer Tochter? 
E : Ja.

E : Nein, ich will nicht.

Ms. Beatrice B. remembers her coma as a dream where she saw many friends and family she knew.

E: I have a lot of dreams, a lot of dreams where I see all my family, my husband's family, employees, all my friends, family friends, my girlfriend, my daughter's girlfriends, I see everything. But on the other hand my brother, my sister...I see everyone, but not my mother and my father.
I: So you were in a coma, but you still perceived the presence of people? 
E: Very, very much so. Everybody, everybody was there.

Mrs. Beatrice B remembers dreams during her coma period.

Many patients in the ICU experience the state of coma or sedation. Coma can be caused by changes in metabolism, the severe illness, or sedating and pain-relieving medications. Thus, patients often experience their time in the ICU in a fragmented way and forget much of the experience.

Coma/Sedation

Mrs. Béatrice B. was afraid of being in pain when the medical team came to mobilise her, but she understood that it was for her own good.

I : And aren't there times when you would have preferred not to be mobilised and they made you do it anyway because they said it was for your own good or something like that?
E : Yes, that's what I don't like to do, because I don't like feeling bad, because I'm afraid, it's true. And she said: ‘No, madam: you're doing this for yourself, it's for your own good, you see you've been here in intensive care for a long time’, she showed me my green card (insurance) and I look at it all the time too. ‘I'm the nurse, I've made a note of it.’ I don't know how she can.

Fearing mobilization

.Patients are aware of their inability to be and act autonomously. They suffer from the fact that the team often does not understand what they are feeling. This feeling of discomfort is accompanied by forced patience, often by fear or anxiety, and sometimes by aggression. On the other hand, they appreciate the clinical team's expertise in this area.

Understanding the feeling of helplessness

Mrs. Beatrix B. feels a great sense of gratitude towards the team.

I : When you think back to that time, what feelings do you have now?
E : Well, I have all the time in the world and I don't know how to say thank you to all these people. I don't have much money, but I gave a truckload of chocolates. To say thank you. Even my husband said you are really yours, cheerful 24 hours a day, I know. You can't find that person. I know. She is really one of those people who, with love, with the sick, we really need that.

Gratitude

Most patients praise the clinical team. It was a difficult time and they are grateful to have survived.
