Mrs. Béatrice B. was afraid of being in pain when the medical team came to mobilise her, but she understood that it was for her own good.

I : E non ci sono state volte in cui avresti preferito non essere chiamata e invece ti hanno chiamata comunque perché dicevano che era per il tuo bene o qualcosa del genere?
E : Sì, è quello che non mi piace fare, perché non mi piace stare male, perché ho paura, è vero. E lei mi dice: “No, signora: lo faccio per lei, è un bene, vede, lei è qui da molto tempo in terapia intensiva”, mi ha mostrato la mia tessera sanitaria (assicurazione) e anch'io la guardo sempre. “Io sono l'infermiera, l'ho annotato.” Non so come faccia.

Avere paura del coinvolgimento

Mme. Béatrice B. craignait d' avoir mal lorsque l'équipe médicale venait la mobiliser, mais elle comprenait que c'était pour son bien.

I : Et y a-t-il pas des fois où vous auriez préféré ne pas être mobilisée et on vous l’a quand même fait parce qu’on disait mais c’est pour votre bien ou comme ça?
E : Oui c’est ce que j’aime pas faire, parce que j’aime pas sentir mal, parce que j’ai peur c’est vrai ça. Et elle dit: "non madame: vous faites ça, c’est pour vous, c’est bien vous voyez vous êtes longtemps ici aux soins intensifs", elle montrée ma carte verte (assurance) et je regarde tout le temps aussi. "Moi je suis l’infirmière, j’ai noté." Je sais pas comment elle peut.

Craindre la mobilisation

Frau Beatrice B. hatte Angst, dass es wehtun würde, wenn das Ärzteteam sie mobilisierte, aber sie verstand, dass es zu ihrem Besten war.

I : Und gab es nicht auch Zeiten, in denen Sie lieber nicht mobilisiert worden wären und es trotzdem gemacht wurde, weil man sagte, aber es ist zu Ihrem Besten oder so?
E : Ja, das mache ich nicht gerne, weil ich mich nicht gerne schlecht fühle, weil ich Angst habe, das stimmt. Und sie sagt: „Nein, Madame: Sie machen das, das ist für Sie, das ist gut, sehen Sie, Sie sind lange hier auf der Intensivstation“, sie zeigt meine grüne Karte (Versicherung) und ich schaue auch die ganze Zeit zu. „Ich bin die Krankenschwester, ich habe es vermerkt.“ Ich weiß nicht, wie sie das kann.

Die Mobilisierung fürchten

I : And aren't there times when you would have preferred not to be mobilised and they made you do it anyway because they said it was for your own good or something like that?
E : Yes, that's what I don't like to do, because I don't like feeling bad, because I'm afraid, it's true. And she said: ‘No, madam: you're doing this for yourself, it's for your own good, you see you've been here in intensive care for a long time’, she showed me my green card (insurance) and I look at it all the time too. ‘I'm the nurse, I've made a note of it.’ I don't know how she can.

Fearing mobilization

Ms. Beatrice B. remembers her coma as a dream where she saw many friends and family she knew.

E: I have a lot of dreams, a lot of dreams where I see all my family, my husband's family, employees, all my friends, family friends, my girlfriend, my daughter's girlfriends, I see everything. But on the other hand my brother, my sister...I see everyone, but not my mother and my father.
I: So you were in a coma, but you still perceived the presence of people? 
E: Very, very much so. Everybody, everybody was there.

Mrs. Beatrice B remembers dreams during her coma period.

Many patients in the ICU experience the state of coma or sedation. Coma can be caused by changes in metabolism, the severe illness, or sedating and pain-relieving medications. Thus, patients often experience their time in the ICU in a fragmented way and forget much of the experience.

Coma/Sedation

Mrs. Beatrice B. was happy to see her husband, but refused to receive visits from others.

E : Yes, the ceiling. He also showed me, I went there to look, I took the photo, I said this/that I remember. And every time I talk to my husband for a moment there because he can't always, I'm sad. But he can't go either because I have the child, I have work. And after he's there, I feel even safer. That's it.
I : Okay. So the fact that your husband came to visit you was a plus?
E : Yes.
I : But when you were awake, I'm not talking about the coma phase, when you were in intensive care.
E : Yes. 
I : And when you were awake, who came to see you? Your husband?
E : Yes.
I : But not really friends?
E : No, I don't like to have them.
I : Because it wasn't allowed?
E : No, it's rather that I don't like someone coming. During...
I : Okay. It was you who decided that only your husband could come.
E : Yes.
I : And your daughter? 
E : Yes. 
I : Also. But with the other people, it was you who could, you had the right to say: I want to or I don't want to.
E : No, I don't want to.
I : You were the one who said that?
E : Yes. Even when I'm upstairs, when someone I didn't want for a week I don't like the visits. I'm tired.

Choose visitors yourself

Family and friends are helpful during the ICU stay. But patients want to be able to choose their visitors. It is therefore important that the team informs and involves the family.

Contact with family

Mrs. Beatrix B. feels a great sense of gratitude towards the team.

I : When you think back to that time, what feelings do you have now?
E : Well, I have all the time in the world and I don't know how to say thank you to all these people. I don't have much money, but I gave a truckload of chocolates. To say thank you. Even my husband said you are really yours, cheerful 24 hours a day, I know. You can't find that person. I know. She is really one of those people who, with love, with the sick, we really need that.

Gratitude

Most patients praise the clinical team. It was a difficult time and they are grateful to have survived.
